WHO WE ARE
In February 2016, “Simenza” Cumpagnia siciliana sementi contadine, a non-profit cultural association, was set up with the aim of protecting and enhancing Sicilian biodiversity in an environmentally sustainable way.
The need to ensure “dignified” remuneration for producers thus allowing farms to survive has led to the creation of a different marketing system for its members’ products; hence after the drafting of the Simenza disciplinary relating to the production of ancient grains and their derivatives, it was decided to establish a consortium to which only those associates who agree to subscribe to the rules of the aforementioned disciplinary can join.
The “SeedCily” consortium was established on April 4, 2019 and 18 farms and 2 processors throughout the Sicilian territory have since joined.
MISSION
It is essential for the consortium, as well as for Simenza, to promote the culture of organic agriculture and agroecology, favoring the typical products of Sicilian agro-biodiversity, with the awareness that only by eliminating synthetic chemical inputs will it be possible to contribute to the improvement of the quality standards of food and the environment.
For SeedCily, it is fundamental to reaffirm a new food model, based on the rediscovery of the natural combination of biodiversity, food, territory, gastronomic culture, health and respect for the environment.

Organic agricultural production, as regulated by the EU, ensures the improvement of the ecosystem and promotes “healthy” nutrition for the consumer, with a consequent decrease in the risk of related and / or relatable diseases.
Furthermore, organic agriculture contributes significantly to the reduction of the consumption of water resources and erosive phenomena which are among the main causes of climate change, desertification and consequent hydrogeological instability.
Finally, we are convinced that Sicily, for its geographical position in the centre of the Mediterranean and for its unique climate in the world, is certainly the region in which, better than in any other, organic farming of excellence can be achieved.
